» Update: Weekend (2011) - A review.

Additional discussion:

After publishing this review, I received feedback from a reader who highlighted an important point. The interaction is below.

Lascauroch:

I really like your review of Weekend. I agree with all the points you made. I remember when I saw it, I never really felt anything growing on me until the credits were rolling and my eyes were watering. Subtlety is film is pretty rare these days, and I especially never expected it from a “gay” movie.
While I think that, over time, it will be best for gay cinema to step away from the label and edge into the mainstream, the inherent issues that the gay perspective brings to view should be embraced. So I think that Weekend does an excellent job of not being too self-aware of its homosexual overtones while also remarking on the often sad nature of the homosexual relationship. Again, I think its strength lies in its subtlety.

Me:

I found myself nodding a long with what you were saying. Thanks for your comments and I totally agree with what you say about gay cinema. While edging towards the mainstream would help towards exposure, maintaining its distinct attention to gay issues is still so important. Weekend did this so brilliantly, as many scenes could easily be lifted from a film without gay characters, yet their sexuality came into it when it mattered. Subtelty is certainly the way forward.

I’m back to writing my blog, coming to you in the form of a film review…

Take a read.

Weekend blurb

Today was the third morning of watching the sun rise, but it will be the last time I watch it indirectly, from my bed. The mirror fell from the windowsill and now has a huge crack through the botttom half of it.
Gives it character…?
The best reason to go for a morning run…
Finally, my very own sunrise.
I just found this from a drunken photoshop session. But it’s true, I do ♥ fiesta.
I miss my beard.
I’m growing my beard.
The highlight of my rainy walk back from work…A pearl in my ocean of a winter’s Monday afternoon.
Look it’s avada kedavra.
Beanies Wholefoods is one of my favourite places in the world…
Our sink at 11 Babes Street looked absolutely marv today.
My closest friend, Tom, and I, while bleaching my hair at LeeLee’s.I’m so psyched that Tom is home from China, now we get to do things like this.
p.s. Do you like my cape?
